Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Administration (CAGS)
with a Concentration in Facilitating Reflective Practice (FRP)
(administered by the Educational Administration Program in partnership with the Program in Critical and Creative Thinking)

The CAGS Program in Educational Administration allows students not seeking certification as school administrators to take a Concentration in Facilitating Reflective Practice (FRP), which is offered in partnership with the CCT. In place of courses specifically directed at certification, FRP concentrators substitute courses from CCT, Instructional Design, and other UMass Programs concerned with topics such as progressive models of leadership and learning organizations, adult learners and life-long professional development, dialogue and communication within organizations. Co-advisors from Educational Administration and CCT help FRP concentrators choose an appropriate program of studies to match their specific interests.

Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Administration
with a Concentration in Facilitating Reflective Practice
(administered by the Educational Administration Program in partnership with the Program in Critical and Creative Thinking)

The Educational Administration (Ed. Admin.) Program at UMass Boston works to "develop a cadre of leaders with the vision, the courage, and the skills to make a difference in schools and in the lives of children and adolescents." The Program in Critical and Creative Thinking (CCT) provides its "students and others with an understanding of the processes of critical thinking and creativity, and with ways of helping others develop these processes in a variety of educational, professional, and social situations." The two Programs have now entered a partnership in recognition that:
-education takes place in many government, corporate, non-profit, and informal settings; and
-many graduates will take leadership roles that are not official administrative ones as they strive to fulfill the needs of their schools, workplaces, and communities, adapt to social changes, and collaborate with others to these ends.

Starting in the summer of 2000, a Concentration in "Facilitating Reflective Practice" (FRP) will be available within the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Administration. Each April a small number of applicants for the FRP Concentration will be considered by the Ed. Admin. Program for inclusion in a cohort of 15-20 students. The cohort will take many courses together over the following two years, and prospective FRP concentrators should note that most of their fellow students will be seeking certification as school administrators. In place of courses specifically directed at certification, FRP concentrators will be able to substitute courses from CCT, Instructional Design, and other UMass Programs concerned with topics such as progressive models of leadership and learning organizations, adult learners and life-long professional development, dialogue and communication within organizations. Co-advisors from both Programs will help FRP concentrators choose an appropriate program of studies to match their specific interests.

A brochure is available from the Ed. Admin. Program that describes the Program's conceptual framework, distinctive features, and application procedures. CCT course offerings and other activities can be viewed on the CCT website, http://omega.cc.umb.edu/~cct. To discuss your interests further before submitting an application (deadline April 1), please contact Lee Teitel, Ed. Admin. Program Director (617.287.7612; lee.teitel@umb.edu), or Peter Taylor, CCT Acting Program Director (617.287.7636; peter.taylor@umb.edu).
