R. S. says that the first film (Pather Panchali, 1955) of Indian film director Satyajit Ray's trilogy shows a field of something that might be Phragmites. I haven't seen the film, but I just looked up a blurb that suggested it was a paddy of very tall rice. Does anyone know what it is?
In the Boston area, some Phragmites stands have gained a reputation as trysting places, a plus or minus, I suppose, depending on who is using them and who wishes they weren't.
I swear I saw Phragmites in the background of a night outdoor scene on a Seinfeld rerun. I am hoping that a true Seinfeld fan will confirm or deny this apparition.
If anyone has seen the July-August 1998 issue of "Voice for Health", a giveaway chiropractic "magazine-lette" that B.L. sent me a copy of, it looks like Phragmites has made the cover.
"Travel & Leisure Golf" is a magazine that has
recently advertised subscriptions with a glossy flyer showing a golfer
(looking like actor James Woods) posing next to a tall stand of golden
Phrag stalks and plumes. There's some short new growth at perhaps knee
level. Maybe we could put a date on the photo by this if we knew which
course it was taken at. I would really like to know how big a problem (if
it is considered one) this plant is becoming on golf courses.
